Be thankful for being a Muslim

Church-of-St-Mark

Shaykh Abu Ali Daqqaq (Allah have mercy on him) stood at the entrance of a church and recited,

وَلَوْلَا نِعْمَةُ رَبِّي لَكُنْتُ مِنَ الْمُحْضَرِينَ

And had it not been for the favour of my Lord, I too had been of those haled forth (to doom).

As Saffat 57

Resala e Ainiya

Being a Muslim is great blessing. We should appreciate this and thank Allah for this repeatedly. This thankfulness is a safeguard from kufr.

Ilahi teri chokhat per…

makkah_madinah

Ilahi teri chokhat per bhikari ban ker aya hoon,
Sarapa faqr hoon, ijz-o-nadamat saath laya hoon,
Bhikari woh ke jis ke paas jholi hai na payala hai,
Bhikari woh jisey hiras-o-hawas nay maar dala hai,
Mata-e-deen-o-danish, nafs ke hathon se lutwa ker.

Sakoon-e-qalb ki daulat hawas ki bhent charha ker,
Lutta ker sari poonji ghaflat-o-issyan ki daldal mein,
Sahara lene aya hoon tere kaabay ke aanchal mein,
Gunahon ki lipatt sey, kaynat-e-qalb afsurda,

Iraaday muzmehehal, himmat shikasta hoslay murda,
Kahan say laoon takat dil ki sachi tarjumani ki,
Ke kis jhanjhal mein guzri hein ghariyan zindagani ki.

Khulasa yeh ke bus jull bhun ker apni roo-sayahi sey,
Sarapa faqr ban ker apni haalat ki tabahi sey,
Tere darbar mein laya hoon apni ab zaboon-haali,
Teri chokhat ke laeq har amal se hath hein khali,
Yeh Tera ghar hai ye Tere mehr ka darbar hai Maula
Sarapa noor hai, ik mohbat-e-anwaar hai Mola.

Teri chokhat ke jo adab hein, main unn se khali hoon,
Nahi jis ko saleeqa manganey ka, woh sawali hoon
Zuban ghalt-e-nadamat dil ki na’kas tarjumani per,
Khudaya reham meri iss zaban-e-ijz-zabani per,
Ye ankhein khushk hein, Ya Rabb inhein rona nahi aata,
Sulagtay daagh hein dil mein jinhein dhona nahi aata.

Sayyidi Mawlana Mufti Mohammad Taqi Usmani (may Allah preserve him)

Shaikh: image problem

Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani (Allah preserve and protect him) said,

‘Adopting a life style and promoting an air of being a Sufi Shaikh is wrong (for those who have permission to initiate mureed).

None of our pious predecessors (akabir) did this. They lived a simple life style (as is the Sunna of our beloved Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace). Their hallmark is the extreme humility (tawadhu).

Moreover, it is dangerous as it leads to extreme attitudes of reverence by their followers.  (Sometimes excuses are made for noncompliance to Shariah.)’

1st Shawwal 1437/6 July 2016 Wednesday, residence, Darul Uloom Karachi, pre-zuhar

In his instructions to whom he gave permission to initiate mureed (mojaaz) Sayyidi wa sanadi said,

۔ کبھی مخدومیت، یا مروجہ پیری مریدی کی شان بنانے کی کوشش نہ کریں، بلکہ اس کو اپنے لیۓ زھر قاتل سمجھیں

Never try to adopt the lifestyle of being someone senior and superior or that of contemporary Sufi Shuyukh.  In fact, consider this to be the most potent poison (for your spirituality).

Request for esal e thawab

Shaikh Qari Waliullah khalifa of Maulana Abdul Haleem Jonpuri (Allah have mercy on them) passed away on 31st May 2016 in Mumbai.

He had established the publication house Maktaba e Ashrafiya to propagate the teachings of Hakim al Umma Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (Allah have mercy on him) and his successors.

May Allah have mercy on him and raise his status in hereafter manifolds. And give sabr e jameel to all of us. Ameen!

Please, do make dua and esal e thawab for him.

JazakAllah

Shaykh’s job

Musleh al Umma Maulana Shah Wasiullah Allahabadi (Allah have mercy on him) said,

‘A genuine (muhaqqiq) Spiritual mentor’s  (Shaykh) job is to inform the disciple of his shortcomings.

That is what I (personally) practice.  And then I evaluate how much sinful involvement has he (the disciple) abandoned.

I do not inquire about the litanies (wird) recited.  Brother! If you recite the wird you will for sure get inspiration (warid). This is an affair between you and Allah. Your reward will be according to the effort you put in. ‘

Majales Musleh al Umma ra, volume 6, page 129

Ijazet & khilafet aren’t permanent

Hakim al Umma Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (Allah have mercy on him) use to update and publish the list of his khulafa (appointed representatives) almost every year. This was to facilitate the search for spiritual mentors by seekers.
Many new names were included for those who accomplished the required criteria to be a Shaikh.

Few names were deleted. They included the dead and those who did not follow up regularly to ensure that they continued to stay and progress on the path. Some exclusions were for those who became distracted and fell into the traps of nafs and Shaytan. These points were explicitly mentioned in the updated list.

Ma’asir e Hakeemul Ummat ra,

Therefore, mere certificate of ijazet or khilafet is not enough. Continuous steadfastness on Shariah and spiritual progress is required.

Ijazet: Who is worthy of it?

Murideen used to come to Shaykh al Hadith Maulana Zakariyah (Allah have mercy on him) during Ramadan. During his initial years he used to send them to Hazrat Abdul Qadirahmer Raipuri (Allah have mercy on him)(for them to stay in his blessed company). Regarding this Shaykh al Hadith writes:

“The condition of some of them improved greatly and with the spiritual blessings (tawajjuhaat) of Hazrat Raipuri (Allah have mercy on him) it became even better but some of the residents there said to my guests (i.e. Murideen): “Why hasn’t Shaykh given you permission (of Ba’yat) until now?” This thing became a poison for them as they began to consider themselves something.

It is a well-established principle in this field (of Tasawwuf) that as long as one considers himself to be incompetent and unworthy then he is successful; but as soon as he considers himself as competent and worthy then he becomes unsuccessful.I have experienced this in many of the friends and close senior murideen (khuddam) of my pious elders.

This incompetent writer was given permission (of Ba’yat) by my Shaykh (Allah have mercy on him) in Dhi Qa’dah 1345H in Madinah Munawwarh. This incompetent writer remembers it clearly that without any exaggeration I held the feet of Hazrat Raipuri (Allah have mercy on him) that please don’t mention it to anyone in India. But Hazrat insisted that he would definitely inform them and began writing to people in India from there (i.e. Madinah Munawwarah).

After coming back to india I did not get the courage to accept anyone’s Ba’yat for a long time. Perhaps it is mentioned somewhere in Aap Beeti that I started accepting for Ba’yat after being scolded by my Uncle (Maulana Ilyas May Allah have mercy on him). Thereafter I went to Hazrat Shaykhul Islam (Hussan Ahamd Madni)and Hazrat Raipuri (May Allah have mercy on them both) several times that if they take consideration of my inability and thus order me to stop accepting anyone for Ba’yat then I will get a way out. But each time they in return scolded me. I remember a saying of Shaykhul Islam (Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madni, Allah have mercy on him) that on my request he angrily replied “Who accepts anyone for Ba’yat considering himself to be worthy and competent? The one who does that is himself unworthy and incompetent. The successful one is he who considers himself incompetent at all times”.

Quran recitation: Mobile vs mushaf

In the Prophet’s mosque (Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani (Allah preserve & protect him) instructed a murid who was reciting the blessed Quran  from his mobile phone,
‘In a place where a mushaf (printed text of Quran) is available it is best to read from it.

Reading Quran from a mobile application is permissible. However, the blessings of reading from a mushaf are more. The Quranic picture in mobile are the reflection of the text (not the original text).

Moreover, in reading from the mushaf an individual is more cautious and observant of the proper etiquettes (adaab). He should try to do this even when he is  reading from mobile (when mushaf is not available).

Qari Rahim Baksh (Allah have mercy on him) was a great haafiz and teacher of Quranic recitations (qiraat). He tutored thousands of students. However,  in spite of memorizing the whole Quran he use to do his regular daily recitation by reading from a mushaf and placing his finger on each single word. This was to get the maximum blessings possible. ‘

Reality of Deen: Concern for Hereafter

لامخل

Musleh-al-Umma Maulana Wasiullah Allahabadi (Allah have mercy on him) said,

Deen (religiosity) in reality is the name given to the life of the heart.

This life sprouts by having concern for the hereafter (akhira).

These days in spite of increasing outward acts of religiosity like prayers (salah), fasting,  religious gatherings and discourses, religious teachers and students, even more than before, the (religiously cognizant and) savvy (ahle ahsas) individuals realize that all these activities are lifeless.

Now only the (outer) form of Deen exists. The (inner form, the) spirit has become extinct.

The reason for this (calamity) is that in places where there are no spiritually cognizant and capable mentors then how would the people of that locality know about the spiritual and esoteric matters. If they are unaware of these matters then it will be impossible for them to practice them. Without practice a (spiritual) state (that is, concern for the hereafter) will not develop. In these areas only the outward form of (religious activities like) prayers and fasting will exist and the reality and spirit (of Deen) will be corrupted. This will lead to spread of (religious) deviance and corruption in that locality.’

Serving: The 3 conditions

Hakim al Umma Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (Allah have mercy on him) said,

‘There are three conditions for effectively serving others and gaining reward in hereafter.  They are,

1. Sincerity . That is seeking Allah’s pleasure in doing it.

2. Having a close relationship. That is, who is being served does not feel burdened by it.

3. Knowing the task being done.’

Shajara: a special benefit of its recitation

img_5795.jpeg

Hakim al Umma Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (Allah have mercy on him) mentioned,

‘It has been an experience of an individual that when disturbing and worldly thoughts plagued his mind and no remedy seemed to be effective, the recitation of Shajara (the spiritual chain listing all the masters of this path) was beneficial. (Immediately) An aversion was felt for the worldly.’

Shaikh & murid:Perfectness

arabic_calligrapher_by_fouadhoussin-d49w2ex

Shaikh Umar Birbalwi (Allah have mercy on him) said,

‘The perfect spiritual mentor (pir-e-kamil) is one who does not let the disciple to burnout ( tire or give up on this path due to his short comings).

Similarly, an adept disciple (kamil murid) never tires out (and gives away hope of achieving success. He is persistent in his effort to please Allah.)’
