Dreams

Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani ( Allah preserve & protect him) was on the phone. It seemed that someone wanted to narrate a dream and request for interpretation.

Shaykhexcused himself saying: “Brother! I don’t know interpretation of dreams!”

Essential for Tasawwuf

Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani ( Allah preserve & protect him) advised:

“Two things are necessary in Tareeq (Tasawwuf):

1. Ikhlas (sincerity)

2. Mudawamat (regularity)

Mudawamat (regularity) is effective by itself. There is no alternative to being regular in one’s daily  ma’moolat (recitations, prayers, recitation of Quran, etc.) except by forcing oneself.

Our respected teacher Maulana Rasheed Ahmad used to quote from Maulana Khair Muhammad (May Allah’s mercy be upon them both):

“The excuse that I am not regular in my ma’moolat because of being busy is a sign of lack of importance given to the ma’moolat.”

It means you did not include your ma’moolat in the list of things which keep you busy.”

It was learnt that Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani (Allah preserve & protect him gave Ijazat-e-Baiyah to Hazrat Maulana Mufti Nur Muhammad Sahab (Allah protect him) of Burma (Myanmar).
Someone had asked Hazrat Maulana last year as to whether Hazrat had given him Ijazat-e-Baiyah. Hazrat Maulana replied: “No no. I still have a long way to go for my Islah (moral reformation).”

Tariqah

Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani (Allah preserve & protect him) said,

Ṭarīqah is part of Sharīʿah.

My Shaykh’s Shaykh Ḥakīm al-Ummah Mawlānā Ashraf ʿAlī Thānawī (d. 1362/1943) revived taṣawwuf and purified it from many innovations that had crept into it. He also prescribed an easy solution for people nowadays who are unable to undertake the sacrifices undertaken by the saints of the past. He prescribed two easy things to keep a firm relationship with Allah Almighty. The first is making abundant Shukr (gratitude) and the second is making abundant supplications.

The first half of Sūrah al-Fātiḥah indicates upon the first whilst the second half indicates upon the second. Hold on to the maʾthūr (transmitted/Sunnah) supplications and establish a firm relationship with Allah. This is an easy prescription.”

Knowledge without actions is useless

Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani (Allah preserve & protect him) said, “Knowledge on its own does not benefit. My father Mufti Muḥammad Shafīʿ [Allah have mercy on him, d. 1396/1976] would say, ‘if knowledge was the criterion for a person’s virtue, then Satan was the most knowledgeable, however, his knowledge did not benefit him, because he disobeyed Allah.’

Therefore, knowledge alone is not in itself the primary objective. The primary objective is the obedience of Allah and his Messengers (i.e. acting as the knowledge states).

Rights of Shaykh

Hakim al Umma Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (Allah have mercy on him) once mentioned:

When a person takes someone as his Shaykh or religious guide, then in order for him to benefit from the Shaykh, he will have to fulfil three essential requirements. These three requirements are among the rights which he owes to the Shaykh and should be borne in mind at all times. These requirements are:

  • He should have faith (I’tiqaad) in him i.e. he should have love and respect for him and accept him to be a pious, rightly guided person who follows the sunnah.
  • He should have trust (I’timaad) in him i.e. he should have confidence in the guidance and knowledge he imparts and regard him capable of guiding him correctly in Deeni matters.
  • He should submit (Inqiyaad) to him i.e. he should follow the advices and teachings of the Shaykh diligently with complete commitment and dedication.

Dealing with Wife

A close seeker arranged for a dinner without prior consultation and invited Hakim al Umma Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (Allah have mercy on him).

Hakim al Umma reprimanded him for acting against the principles (for inviting a guest) by doing all the arrangements without approval. Moreover, he excused himself for the following reason.

The Shaykh said,

My household situation is (now) delicate (after the second marriage). This week it is the turn to eat at my other wife’s place. So far due to travels and invitations I have not been able to eat there even once. Today I had the intention to explain this situation to her (and try to get a approval) ,however, I was afraid that this might be attributed to neglect. As I expected, before I could say something she complained that all the travelings and eating invitations happens only during her turn.

The Shaykh added, These are the ways females (usually) act. I have made a intention to listen to whatever is said (and not reply). I do not want to respond back according to rules  and regulations. I desire not to break anyone’s heart or cause them anguish.

Instructions for the Seeker 1

Hakim al Umma Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (Allah have mercy on him) instructed,

‘In writings or sayings of some pious sages there appear to be things that are contrary to the teachings of Sharia. Keep your beliefs (aqida) as per Sharia. However, do not consider those pious sages to be wrongful. Presume that I cannot understand its (true) meanings.’

The Divine Grace

A seeker requested further elaboration of the Allah’s fazal mentioned in the previous post.

Lessons from a Meeting with Shaykh Mufti Taqi Usmani

One fortunate day, I was blessed with the opportunity to accompany Shaykh Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani on a Nikah ceremony that was to be conducted in a vicinity near Darul’Uloom Karachi (1).

To obtain his permission for accompanying him, I was waiting for him outside his residence. His car was parked at his doorstep and in its direction, his driver had opened a car door in anticipation of his arrival.

When he stepped out of of his home, l quickly moved towards him to seek his permission. As soon as he saw me approaching towards the car, he moved around the car while leaving the opened door for me. Seeing this, I was absolutely dumbfounded and I tried to gather my confidence to utter ‘Hazrat can I accompany you?’. He plainly replied ‘Yes, sure!’, while indicating towards the opened door. While I was still gazing at him in amazement, he casually opened the door on his side and got in to the car. Feeling immensely humbled, I too followed the suit by using the door that had originally been opened for him.

Thus I sat with the Shaykh on the back seat of the car (Alhamdulillāh for such a privilege). I had planned to consult him regarding a personal matter in brief but I thought to wait for him to settle well in the car before beginning to talk. Meanwhile, I was hoping that my amazement and excitement will also settle, allowing me to start the talk.

However, I noticed that as soon as the Shaykh entered the car, he didn’t let a minute of his to go in vain. He quickly started reading out some Du’aas (for protection) from a booklet. Immediately afterwards, he took out his smart phone and started reciting Qur’an on it! Since my matter wasn’t urgent, I thought to wait for him to get free.

When we reached the Masjid, where the Nikah was to be held, the Shaykh was welcomed by a crowd (which appeared large in that congested locality). He led the ‘Asr Salāh which was followed by the Nikāh. Thereafter, the same crowd accompanied him towards the car.

In a zigzag fashion, I too navigated my way through the crowd to reach the car, eager to find the Shaykh available to talk this time. Interestingly, but no longer surprisingly, he resumed his recitation as soon as he reentered the car.

It was when we entered Darul’Uloom again (and thus were about to reach Shaykh’s residence in a minute), the Shaykh finally kept his cell phone back in his pocket. Fearing that he might engage in another form of Zikr (remembrance of Allah), I took a quick breath, gathered my strength and and spoke up to put forth my query to him, while gasping between my broken words. He listened patiently and then replied to me in a polite and satisfactory manner.

Alhamdulillāh, thus I was able to experience a brief, yet an immensely lesson full, meeting with Shaykh Mufti Taqi Usmani (may Allah Ta’ālā preserve him and allow us to benefit from him).

Dr Sayyid Mohammed Talhah

Advice: when in Makkah

Shaykh Khalid Kurdi (Allah have mercy on him) said that in the blessed city of Madinah he requested a Yemeni Shaykh for dua and advice prior to departing for Makkah mukarramah.

The Yemeni Shaykh made dua for him and instructed,

‘Do not waste time there.

Use it effectively in tawaf, supererogatory salah, recitation of Holy Quran, remembrance of Allah (dhikr) or performing your missed (qaza) salah.

Moreover, under all circumstances avoid all (even in your thoughts), criticism of, and argumentation with, anyone in the Holy precinct of Makkah.

Be busy with your own work. ‘

Making ones ba’yat effective

Shaykh Hakim Kalimullah Aligarhi (Allah preserve & protect him) said,

Why did you make a relationship with the shaykh (spiritual mentor)?

It was done in order to correct one’s ma’amlat (dealings) and that ibadaat (worship) becomes according to sunnah (ways of the prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم)). This is what is called ba’yat.

Remember, just merely giving hand in hand to the shaykh is not enough. There is a lot of misunderstanding about this now-a-days.

Why are the effects of ba’yat not being seen now-a-days?

Before people used to be ba’yat with a shaykh and attain high levels (of spirituality) just within a few days.

The shaykh used to affirm that they have fulfilled the right of their ba’yat. Any matter used to arise, they used to inform the shaykh, the shaykh used to prescribe a remedy for it. They practiced upon it and attained high levels due to that.

Today, we don’t even inform the shaykh (ittila) about ourselves. Until we don’t have a love and yearning (ishq) for our shaykh and Mashaikh, nothing will happen.

Extremism in veneration of Shaykh

Hakim al Umma Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (قدس سرہ) said,

Their is extreme exaggeration in the belief of the ignorants regarding (the veneration of) their Spiritual mentors (Shaykh/pir).

Even those with knowledge are not free from exaggeration, though they don’t consider their Shaykh to be equivalent to God but they have exaggeration in terms of unveiling (Kashf), for example they believe that when the Shaykh is attentive towards the hidden he can find out matters (which are hidden). May Allah Ta’ala save us from this deadly misguidance.

The second manifestation and form of this exaggeration is in consulting the Shaykh in worldly matters.

It took (me) a long time to understand this issue. They believe that whatever the Shaykh says will surely bring success.

Some make interpretation that whatever is uttered will have blessings (“Barakah”) in it.

Whereas, blessing are (actually) in making supplications (Dua), so why don’t they suffice on (requesting for) Dua.

Is this the true meaning of blessings?

Failure can also be a form of it.
