Watching Television
Sayyidi wa sanadi Shaykh Mufti Mohammad Taqi Usmani (Allah preserve him) said in reply to a question about watching television,
‘Contemporary television (programs) are a composite of multiple sins. Almost all of the programs are such that by watching them one indulges in any of these sins. Therefore, it is impermissible to keep a television set at home. I consider it (watching TV) to be inappropriate’

The bane of media outlets!
Arif-billah Dr Abdul Hayy ‘Arifi (Allah have mercy on him) said,
‘The biggest bane of the present society, (which are described to be beneficial by some, however, I consider them to be totally corrupt) are the mass media outlets. These include television, radio and newspaper. They corrupt the morals. They have deteriorated our (humanely) condition, and made us infamous and disreputable.
They broadcast purposeless, paltry, heresy and iconoclastic things. These broadcasting results in the death of humaneness, honor of the human beings and our Islamic faith.
For the sake of God abstain from them!
Do not make an excuse that these can be used for broadcasting good. This a lame pretense. Show me where are they being used to spread good?’

There are various reasons for the above statement. They include: The repeated reading or viewing of reports of crime, devious, irrelevant, irreligious, and anti-Islamic things make an individual insensitive of their gravity.
The level of hatred towards sins is diminished.
The chances of being involved in sins which are a ‘norm’ in society increases.
The value of utilizing time effectively is distorted.
The spiritual darkness that accompanies such things makes it difficult to initiate and sustain good works. Etc.
(Irresponsible use of Internet, especially purposeless surfing, should be included in this.)
Complete deen!
‘Arif-billahDr. Abdul Hayy ‘Arifi (Allah have mercy on him) said,
‘These days major (kabair) and outrageous sins have become prevalent in our society. We consider them to be a form of entertainment. These major sins will never be forgiven until we leave them and repent. Television is being watched in each and every home. Listening music, songs, watching explicit programmes and movies are common day activities.’ 1
‘Brothers! The matter of here-after (akhira) is of extreme magnitude.
It is inappropriate to be at ease by being ignorant of its details.
There will be enquiry about each and every thing, including your financial dealings, social etiquette and moral character.
Remember that until all of these components of deen are correct your salah, fasting, pilgrimage and zakah(all worhip, etc) will be devoid of soul and true meanings.’2

Ruining the Heart via Tongue & Eyes
Hakim al-Umma Mawlana Ashraf Ali Thanawi (Allah have mercy on him) said,
“Two things completely ruin the heart and destroy its luminosity. One is backbiting (ghiba). And the other is seeing the unlawful (bad-nigahi). Both of them have become widespread these days.”

Suhba of books, magazines, newspaper & internet
Shaykh Raziuddin Ahmad Fakhri (may Allah have mercy on him) said,
“Similar to the good and bad effects of the company of an individual and the items of his/her personal use, books, magazines and newspapers also have these effects.
One has to be very cautious in deciding which book or newspaper to read. “

This is also relevant for internet.
Wasting time by visiting unhealthy sites, engaging in useless discussions, chatting, viewing photos or videos and listening to unreliable audio speeches and nasheeds, etc. can be very detrimental spiritually for a seeker.
