Helping for a righteous cause

Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani (Allah protect & preserve him) was recording the Tafsir of Surah Maidah. On reaching the following verse:

وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَان

“And help each other in righteousness and piety, and do not help each other in sin and aggression.”

Shaykh explained:

“Here, the command is to help each other in righteousness. This helping in righteousness is not limited to any group, party, race, etc., rather we are commanded to help each other on the basis of the cause being righteous. Nowadays one thing which can stop someone from cooperating with others in righteousness is the desire to get credit for something. So they think that if this good thing happens under the banner of someone else then I will not get credit for it. So they do not cooperate with others in that good cause. Such behaviour is against the command of this verse.”

Correction regarding: Speaking without knowing the meaning

An individual came to meet Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani (Allah protect & preserve him) and introduced himself as “My Ism-e-Girami is xyz”.

The Shaykh asked “What is the meaning of Girami?” The person remained quiet.

Thereafter the Shaykh repeated “What is the meaning of Girami? If you don’t know, just say I don’t know.

The person replied “I don’t know.”

Thereafter the Shaykh asked those present “What is the meaning of Girami?” Someone replied “Honourable”.

The Shaykh said “Yes. This word Girami (honourable) should not be used for oneself. It is used for one’s seniors.”

Incorrect way of promoting good

Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani (Allah protect & preserve him) was asked the following question:

“In some Masjids the caretakers post a note that only people with Sunnah beard will be allowed in the first Saff. And in some Masjids people without a Sunnah beard are forced out of the first Saff. Is this action correct?”

Sayyidi replied:
“This is tanfeer (driving people away from Deen). This is not correct.”

Dua after Adhan

After the adhan of Asar, it was noticed that Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani ( Allah preserve & protect him) recited more supplications than the well-known supplications to be recited after adhan.

Shaykh commented:

“You all must be reciting the Sunnah supplication after adhan. Besides that, it comes in a Hadith:

“The supplication is not rejected between the Adhan and the Iqamah.” They said: “So what should we say, O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?” He said: “Ask Allah for Al-`Afiyah in this world and in the Hereafter.”

Shaykh continued: “To attain this blessing, one can make it a habit to recite the following dua immediately after the well-known dua after azan:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ فِي دِينِي وَدُنْيَاىَ وَأَهْلِي وَمَالِي

O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and afiyah (well-being) in my religious and my worldly affairs.

“Note: The following supplications are narrated in Ahadith to be recited after Azan:

Convenience

An individual enquired that some people are very particular and insistent about certain matters which are not explicitly specified in Shariah, e.g. whether to wear a watch on the left or right hand, whether the shirt should be sewn such that when buttoning it the right half is on top or the left half, etc. and some people specify some things to extra detail where it seems Shariah has given a wider scope of action, e.g. some people say that the Sunnah of qailoolah (siesta) will only be fulfilled if one lies down in a particular sleeping pose from a specific time to a specific time.

Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani ( Allah preserve & protect him)replied:

(Don’t limit something which is vast) .

If Shariah has not specified something then one should do it according to one’s convenience. Someone asked Imam Abu Hanifah (May Allah’s mercy be upon him) “When I go to take a bath in a river, should I enter the river from the East, West, North or South?” Imam Sahab replied: “Enter from where you hang your clothes.”

Sayyidi jokingly continued: “Just take care that nobody steals your clothes, otherwise you’ll be in trouble.

Showing off

Somebody asked regarding getting random thoughts (wasawis) of riya (showing off).

Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani ( Allah preserve & protect him) replied that riya is a volitional act. It is done, it does not happen by itself.

So one should not be too worried about getting such stray random thoughts. However, there is a chance that these random thoughts may develop into actual riya. So one should remain cautious at all times and vigilantly take note of what thoughts make one happy. At the same time, one should inform Allah Ta’ala about these stray thoughts and seek His protection (i.e. do ruju ilallah).

Look! I have already told you that ruju ilallahis the key to Tareeqat! Just take this one thing with yourself! Adopt it as your way of life!”

Before doing anything do this!

Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani ( Allah preserve & protect him) advised,

“Do everything with Ikhlas (sincerity) and supplicating to Allah (ruju ilallah). Before starting any work, make dua: “Oh Allah! Give me the ability to do this work with sincerity and in a manner which is according to Your Pleasure.”

Remedy for Sins of eyesight

Replying to a letter from a seeker, sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani (Allah protect & preserve him) commented:

“This person was involved in sins of the eyes. A solution was given which Alhamdulillah proved effective. He read the words of a pious elder to whom people complained: “Sir, immodesty has become widespread nowadays.” The pious elder replied: “Where is it? I haven’t noticed any immodesty. When I’m walk in the streets, my gaze does not shift from the path I’m walking on.”

Sayyidi continued: “This person got Tawfeeq to act on this advice. He was also involved in seeing immodest content on his smart phone. He was told to remove the means of this sin if he was not able to control himself otherwise. He removed Wifi from his home to avoid this sin. Spiritual struggle (mujahidda) and sincere dua are needed to avoid sins. As Allah Ta’ala says:

وَالَّذِينَ جَاهَدُوا فِينَا لَنَهْدِيَنَّهُمْ سُبُلَنَا

“As for those who strive in Our way, We will certainly take them onto Our paths”.

Essential for Tasawwuf

Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Mohammed Taqi Usmani ( Allah preserve & protect him) advised:

“Two things are necessary in Tareeq (Tasawwuf):

1. Ikhlas (sincerity)

2. Mudawamat (regularity)

Mudawamat (regularity) is effective by itself. There is no alternative to being regular in one’s daily  ma’moolat (recitations, prayers, recitation of Quran, etc.) except by forcing oneself.

Our respected teacher Maulana Rasheed Ahmad used to quote from Maulana Khair Muhammad (May Allah’s mercy be upon them both):

“The excuse that I am not regular in my ma’moolat because of being busy is a sign of lack of importance given to the ma’moolat.”

It means you did not include your ma’moolat in the list of things which keep you busy.”
