Bestowal of nisbet

IMG_2743.JPG

An individual inquired what was meant by the commonly known saying that at the time of baiyah the pious masters bestow nisbet.

Hakim al Umma Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (Allah have mercy on him) replied,

‘At the time of baiyah there is an overall (ijmalan) bestowal of nisbet. That is, a comprehensive relationship with Allah is created. Establishing a bond with the pious (ahl al Allah) is like creating a bond with Allah. Baiyah induces a sophistication in this bond with Allah.’

Priorities in islah

IMG_2817.PNG

Hakim al Umma Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi ( Allah have mercy on him) said,

‘The pious (masters) do not focus excessively on the exoteric actions (dhahiri a’mal). This is because they can be rectified in a moment merely by changing one’s determination. That is, an individual who does not pray can (make a firm determination) in a moment and start praying, one who shaves his beard can (make a firm determination) in a moment and let it grow. Similarly, in a moment an alcoholic can repent from drinking and a transgressor (fasiq fajir) becomes God-fearing.

The important thing that the pious focus on is the rectification of the moral characteristics (ikhlaq e batinah), like arrogance (kibr) etc.. The rectification of these is very difficult.’

نصاب تصوف

IMG_2624.PNG

It is essential for a seeker to read about the path he/she intends to travel.

This is to make sure he is aware of the goal, the methods to achieve this goal and be aware of the pitfalls in this endeavor.

This curriculum obviously contains many books authored by Hakim Al Umma Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (Allah have mercy on him) whom we consider to be the mujaddid of the previous century.

However, in addition it has classical Tasawwuf texts by masters of this path that include Sheikh Shahab uddin Suharwardi, Imam Ghazali, Sheikh Yafai,  Sheikh Ibn e Ata-Allah Iskanderi, Maulana Jalal uddin Rumi and Sheikh Abdul Wahab Sha’rani (Allah have mercy on them all). This is to confirm that the path we follow is in accordance to the principles and practices of the masters of Tasawwuf.
Moreover, it is to keep in check the cult mentality that leads to a superiority complex and extremist attitude of shunning everyone else beside our Shuyukh.

May Allah make it beneficial for us. Amin!

Hajj & sacrifice: A Divine order

IMG_1205.JPG

Sayyidi wa sanadi Mufti Taqi Usmani (Allah preserve him) said,

‘It is futile to look for worldly benefits and logical explanations in Hajj and sacrifice (udhiya/qurbani).

They are a Divine orders to remind us that we have to follow them irrespective of understanding them in itself or their benefits.

The Divine order requires submission. And this is Islam as defined in Quran,

So, (it was a great episode) when both of them submitted themselves (to Allah’s will), and he laid him on his forehead (to slaughter him),

Tips for islah

IMG_2625.PNG

The pious masters have said that a true seeker is not confused between the virtuous and sinful paths. However, he/she is misled by the desires of lower self (nafs).

May Allah protect us all from the deceptions of nafs. Amin!

Some steps that may be beneficial for a salik in doing a virtuous act or abstaining from a sinful one are as follows,

1. Sincere intention to please Allah by this action
2. Firm active determination of action or abstentions
3. Heartfelt supplication asking Allah for help in this endeavor
4. Mustering courage
5. Performance or abstention from that action
6. Being thankful to Allah if the task is successfully accomplished
7. Repenting immediately if one fails
8. Informing the mentor (Shaikh) of the exact details of progress or failure
9. Fulfilling the penalties as prescribed by the Shaikh
10. Actively contemplating the steps #1 to 5 daily and whenever the desires of nafs surface.
11. Asking Allah at each and every step for facilitation

Indeed facilitation is from Allah alone!

Advice: sufis do not quarrel

IMG_2654.JPG

What did the speaker of beautiful words, the splendid face Bhalul ( majzoob, Allah have mercy on him) say,
When he passed by a quarreling Sufi

If this claimant (lover of Allah) had truly recognized the Friend (Allah), he would not have been involved in argument with the enemy (wasting time in something other-than his love).

Shaikhul mashaikh Haji Imdadullah mohajir Makki (Allah have mercy on him) wrote these verses at the very end of his treatise Faisala e haft masala.

Strange Behavior

A seeker wrote:
When I get back from my office or some where else and am tired then I feel and behave very strange. I don’t like to talk with anyone and if any one talks to me at that time I react very badly with anger regardless of younger or older. This state remains till half an hour or until I get fresh by doing ablution or taking a quick bath.

Sayyidi wa sanadi Hazrat Moulana Mohammad Taqi Usmani sahib (Allah SWT preserve him and allow us to benefit from him abundantly. Ameen) replied:
“The cure for this is to think when coming back home that if I get tired what is the mistake of my family in that? And then after reaching home before talking with anyone first do ablution.”

Breaking the chains of desire

IMG_2554.JPG

Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed ‘Aijiba (Allah have mercy on him) said,

‘The only means of breaking the chains of desires of the lower self (nafs) are,
1. Overwhelming yearning (shauq) (for Allah’s pleasure)
2. Fear that makes one flee (from Allah’s displeasure)
3. Bestowal of Allah’s bounty either via means of a Perfect Shaikh, who possess alchemy potion for bringing this change or without any means,
(He chooses for His grace whom He wills. ) Allah is the Lord of great bounty. (Al-i’Emran : 74)’
